Implicit Bias

Has anyone ever told you, “This is as easy as riding a bike!”?

Last week, my wife introduced me to a YouTube video (below) about the incredible story of an engineer who taught himself, and his young son, how to ride a bike after the bike handles were reversed — such that when you turn the handlebars left, the bike would turn right, and vice versa.

Having biases is just like riding a bike … literally, you'll see. Once we form them (consciously or unconsciously), we retreat and rely on them with the same ease as riding, years after we learned how to ride. This video demonstrates just how powerful some biases can be.

In mediation, it is important to recognize your biases and take steps to control them. Some practical tips:

  • Step back and refocus.
  • Take a walk in your opponent’s shoes.
  • Listen attentively.

Biases are inevitable – as a mediator and as a negotiator. Managing bias becomes simpler, however, if you are prepared. Utilizing these techniques allows you to create specific strategies that you can use in your future mediations and negotiations, and you will see an impact on your effectiveness.
